通过对棉蝗头部的解剖、观察表明,棉蝗头部的构造与非洲飞蝗Locusta migratoriamigratorioides Reiche et Fairmaire和东亚飞蝗Locusta migratoria minilensis Meyen均有几处明显的不同,即棉蝗的蜕裂线呈秤钩状;具有后头后颊沟;额隆线伸达额的下缘:额脊上方1/3部分平坦,2/3部分略凹;左上颚切齿有四个大齿和一个小齿,比右上颚切齿多一大齿,臼齿呈椭圆形。
