To explore ways to confer greater land economic output of orchards without cultivation managements, Liangping pummelo fruits under normal cultivation management and no cultivation management were used to determine the constitutions of main bitter compounds and volatile profiles with the assistance of high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Comparing with the fruit from orchard under normal cultivation managements, significantly higher contents of naringin was detected in the flavedo, albedo, segment membrane and juice sacs of fruits under no cultivation managements. Similarly, limonin and nomilin were also significantly higher in albedo, segment membrane and juice sacs of fruits under no cultivation managements. On the contrary, the total amount of monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, non-terpenoids, and volatiles were all significantly lower in fruit under no cultivation management than those in fruit under normal cultivation management. However, the constitutions and percentages of main volatiles were very similar in fruit from the two different orchards. In summary, the fruit from orchard under no cultivation managements contained lesser volatile compounds, but more bioactive bitter compounds, which led to an unpleasant fresh fruit quality. However, fruit from orchard under no cultivation managements was more suitable for using as functional food with the assistance of popular health propaganda of bitter compounds, which could elevate the economic benefits and land output values of orchard under no cultivation managements.
