Women’s governance of villages has become a prominent phenomenon in rural China. The changes of the rural governance environment has created favorable institutional and social space for women’s participation in village governance. Taking female village party secretaries as the main actors, this paper categorizes women’s village governance into four distinct types based on two dimensions: mode of embeddedness and motivation for participation. These four types are validated through four typical cases in Y County. Furthermore, the paper further analyzes the strategic orientations of the four types from the perspectives of governance structure and governance resources, which influence the field of village governance. The four strategies are identified as innovative development, industrial development, status maintenance, and sincere service. Promoting the substantive participation of rural women in village governance is a crucial pathway toward achieving gender equality in participation and optimizing rural governance. The government should adopt differentiated incentive mechanisms for women of different age groups, strengthen village committee leadership teams, and enhance the capacity building of female village cadres, so as to stimulate women’s positive role in village governance.
