Abstract:Against the background of social stratification, the benign inter-generational mobility of income can narrow the income gap and promote social equity. Based on the data of China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) in 2018,this paper explores the impact of offspring’s education and social network on inter-generational mobility of income. The results show that both offspring’s education and social network can promote the upward inter-generational mobility of income. The former plays a greater role than the latter, and the interaction variable of them have a significant positive effect. Upon further analysis,we find that improving the offspring’s education level is the main way for residents from both urban and rural areas, families from both eastern and western regions and middle-and-low-income families to realize the upward inter-generational mobility of income, and the social network has a significant effect on families from rural areas and central region as well as middle-income families. Therefore, urban and rural residents should combine regional and their own resources to make full use of education to promote upward inter-generational mobility of income. Families from the central region and the high-income group should improve the quality of offspring’s education and enhance the significance of offspring’s education promoting inter-generational mobility of income. The low-income families should strive to move up into the middle-income group, and then integrate education and social network forces to achieve the inter-generational income transition.
