Abstract:With the development of the rural migrant economy and the rapid flow of population, the rural marriage market has gradually formed. The rise of young people’s free will to choose spouse has brought about the transition from the traditional “marriage” mode dominated by parents to the “love” mode independently chosen by offspring. In the open marriage market, farmers compete fiercely for marriage resources. This further induces the generation division of the farmer’s marital responsibility. It is shown that the responsibility of the offspring is to find their own partners in the marriage market, and the father pays for the marriage expenses.Analyzing the process of rural marriage and the formation mechanism of bachelors from the two dimensions of “offspring find partners” and “father pay the marriage expenses ”,this paper finds that three types of bachelors in rural areas can be constructed. In order to cope with the pressure of marriage, farmers are making great changes to their family strategies:(1) Farmers find it difficult to afford the competitive consumption in marriage if they continue their traditional living pattern, thus they actively find access to the labor market to make money; (2) Father increases child’s competitiveness in marriage market by raising the marriage payment; (3) Farmers’ concept of reproduction are changing gradually due to the pressure of marriage.
