Abstract:China produces the world’ s largest pork output but its hog production and pork processing industries are still vulnerable, which requires a good import tariff regime.Generally speaking, the effective protection rates for imports of fresh, chilled and frozen pork and processed pork are greater than those of nominal import tariff rates. The analysis proves that China’s pork import tariffs protect the domestic pork industry effectively.China can continue to fulfil its free trade obligations and protect its pork industry effectively by reducing import tariff rates for inputs of hog production, maintaining import tariff rates for fresh, chilled and frozen pork, maintaining or even increasing import tariff rates for processed pork.Competitiveness increase is the best way to protect China’ s pork industry.China’ s pork sector needs to strengthen the structural reform from the supply side by upgrading hog production, pig slaughtering and pork processing, and the service sector of the pork industry.
